Student Maggie McGetrick wins Odyssey Pin Contest

Not only did Cato-Meridian Middle School student Maggie McGetrick participate in this year’s Region 11 Odyssey of the Mind Competition, but she also did something no other participate can claim.
McGetrick entered and won the region 11 pin design contest. Each year, a student-designed pin is selected and presented to each participating student.
McGetrick’s pin featured a bumblebee, which is special to her because her mother is a beekeeper. McGetrick said bumblebees are inspiring because they seem to accomplish the impossible, similar to what Odyssey of the Mind participates must do.
“A bumblebee isn’t supposed to fly because of its weight, but it does,” McGetrick said. “Kids who participate in Odyssey are given a seemingly impossible problem to solve, but like a hive of bees, they work together to accomplish the task.”
For the design of the pin, McGetrick said she looked up different photos, traced some of her favorites and then added in other elements to make the pin stand out.
