Cayuga County Sheriff's Update - January 17, 2023

Please see the media release for information regarding a threat on social media, which was deemed to be not credible. We would like to thank the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office for the swift response and support. Below is the media release prepared by the Sheriff's Office:

Sheriff Brian Schenck reports that on 16 January, 2023 at approximately 8:20 PM, members of the Sheriffs Office responded to a report of an alleged bomb threat that had been shared on social media and appeared to be directed towards the Cato Central School District. Deputies and Detectives immediately initiated an investigation into the origin of the social media post.
As a result of their investigation, members of the Sheriffs Office did identify and charge a 14-year-old juvenile with the E Felony of Falsely Reporting an Incident in the Second Degree. The name of the individual will not be released due to their age.
Based on the investigation, it does not appear that the threat was credible nor that anyone was at risk of harm at any time as a result.
''Any threats of violence against our schools or members of our community will be investigated thoroughly and those responsible will be held accountable. There are consequences for posting threats of violence on social media and it is not a joke. I would like to commend the administrative staff of the Cato School District and the members of our Sheriffs Office for partnering on this investigation and identifying the responsible individual so quickly. I would also like to thank the Cato-Meridian Central School District for their complete cooperation in this matter.'' - Sheriff Brian Schenck
